All parents have an obligation to take care of their children financially after they have split up.
The law prescribes that parents must contribute to the cost of their children according to financial strength. These costs depend on the needs of the child, which are derived from the standard of living at the time of the cohabitation of the parents and their joint income. The so-called Trema standards (recommendations made by the Dutch Alimony Norms Working Group) apply as a guideline in this respect. This guideline is continuously updated according to social and fiscal developments.
The parents are free to organise the cost of the children in different ways to best suit them. For instance, it is possible to set up a joint children’s account or make arrangements as to who pays which bills. We are happy to provide you with any advice and we know from experience which arrangements are feasible.
